Courses Booster Shot Prerequisites: Boating Course (Sometime in the Past) Been a while since you've done a Fix? Don't remember what 60DST stands for? A bit foggy on the Aids to Navigation? Then this course is for you! This is a one day refresher course that reviews various topics from Aids to Navigation, Course made Good and Fixes, to Plotting and Cruising. Marine Maintenance Prerequisites: None Seamanship Power is recommended This course will provide the average boat owner with enough information to understand boat maintenance and repair. Subjects covered include: repairs to wood, fibreglass and metal; maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems; spars and rigging, tools and fitting. We also try to incorporate a visit to a local fibreglass repair facility and a local engine re-builder. Seamanship Power Prerequisite: None This course expands on the knowledge gained in the Boating course to provide the knowledge to be a safe and proficient operator of a power driven boat. Subjects covered include: power trains, engine controls, engine troubleshooting and diagnostics, fuel and fuel systems, electrical systems, cooling, lubrication and maintenance. If you are interested in taking the Marine Maintenance course, we recommend that you take this course first. Seamanship Sail Prerequisite: None An introductory course that teaches basic sailing techniques for safe sailboat operation under a variety of conditions. It will encourage the participant to become a more competent sailor. Subjects covered include: spars and rigging, sails and theory of sail action, sailboat handling and cruising under sail. VHF Radio Talk Seminar Prerequisite: None This two-night seminar will teach you the special phonetic alphabet, correct calling and distress procedures. This course will also include the new DSC component to the certificate. If you only need to upgrade your current ROC(M) to get the DSC endorsement, please stay tuned for a date in the future when we will offer this component as a separate module. CPS has been delegated by Industry Canada the full authority to issue Restricted Operator Certificates (Maritime) [ROC(M)] and to administer all aspects of the examination program. Successful completion of this course qualifies you for the Restricted Operator Certificate (Maritime). Weather Prerequisites: None The detailed subject matter will enable the boat operator to anticipate adverse forecasts, by gathering pertinent information and interpreting weather signs. Subjects covered include: pressure, wind, temperature and moisture, air masses, frontal weather, clouds, precipitation and fog; wave theory, and forecasting the weather.
